Kirinda Viharaya
This temple is located at a distance of 7 km (11.3 km) from Tissamaharama town on the Tissa-Kirinda highway. In ancient times this was called 'Meda Viharaya'. This shrine has an important place in the history of Ruhuna.
King Kelani Tissa sacrificed his daughter Princess Vihara Maha Devi to the sea to save the people from the threat of flooding. It is said that this princess floated in the sea and reached this place on the southeastern coast of Ceylon. According to historical sources, this temple was built by King Kavantissa to commemorate the landing of Vihara Maha Devi at Ruhuna.
Built on a rocky outcrop on the Kirinda beach, this temple has a Bo tree, a temple house and a carved statue of Goddess Vihara Maha Devi. Located in a very pleasant environment with a clear view of the land and the sea, this is a popular shrine among Lakdiva Buddhists.
AD in this land. Poetic inscriptions acknowledging that it was a creation of King Mahadatika Mahanaga belonging to the 1st century, it is stated that in this land the superstitious abandoned their views and embraced Buddhism.
